Meditating Using Skype

Meditating Using Skype

My friend LD and I started doing meditation together via Skype before COVID-19 arrived.

We both have studied and trained in Buddhist meditation practices for years. LD many more than myself, as I came to Buddhism late.

I was trained as a meditation facilitator when living in Atlanta. And have led mediation sessions at our church here in TX on and off over the years.

We decided that it would be good to have some support while doing our meditation practice. And getting together fighting rush hour traffic was not something we wanted to try. It is too easy to skip meeting if you have to spend a large part of the evening driving to and from places.

So we decided to try meditating using skype.

We really had no idea what it would be like but thought it would be fun to give it a shot!

It took a bit of time to work out the technology, as LD had just started doing Skype for work. But once we got past the technical aspects we found it to be a lot of fun.

We spend some amount of time catching up. Sometimes we video chat for 20 minutes, sometimes over an hour.

But eventually we start our meditation practice. We both use a mindfulness-awareness practice that works on following your breath as the focus of meditation.

Often after a full day of work sitting at my desk, I often will need to lay down on the floor with my feet propped up on the chair. It helps reverse the flow of blood and gives my legs some relief and also helps relieve the stress in my neck and shoulders from being hunched over the keyboard all day.

Often one, or both, of our cats will join us.

My cat loves to take over my chair as soon as I leave it. She will grudgingly allow me to prop up my feet around her, as long as I don’t move much.

We meditation for 20 mins together. It is amazing to me how relaxed I feel after just that amount of time!

And then I am ready to finish up my day and get some rejuvenating sleep!

Such a blessing to have a friend like LD!
