I have been following Sarah Woodhouse on Twitter @sn_woodhouse for some time. As a survivor, I find her posts to be very insightful and helpful.
On occasion, she will post a link to her YouTube channel with short informational videos.
Recently, she posted a video to answer the question “How can I heal my trauma?“
She provides two points that we can use as a guide.
The first point is that trauma healing happens in a “gentle spiral.”
The work begins on the outside where we feel safe and comfortable, then we slowly work in to the center, towards the painful stuff. She points out that not everyone needs to go to the center, but for those that do, we don’t jump right to the painful stuff. That way we build resilience and strength as we do the work.
The second point is that at a high level there are three things that need to be healed: our mind, our body, and our behaviors. If we can give these three the care and attention they need, then we will have a well balanced and rich healing journey and a stable recovery.
